Description of work


The objective of this WP is to identify the features of future ATM and define requirements to 4-D contracts. A new airspace structure, taking the 4D capability of the aircraft into account, has to be designed. 4-D airspace and 4-D airport models for effective planning of 4-D contracts on strategic and tactical level have to be developed. Methods of 4D contracts generation and dynamic correction have to be defined and developed. Methods of automated strategic and tactical planning should be elaborated. Methods of on-board and ground 4D-contracts generation systems have to be identified and required computational resources has to be assessed.

This WP is then divided into 5 tasks as follow. In each task, the required modules will be specified and the corresponding software will be developed:
- T110: Definition of requirements for a 4D contract management compliant with the SESAR ATM perspective;
- T120: 4D airspace digital model development;
- T130: 4D airport digital model elaboration;
- T140: Method of optimal seamless strategic and tactical planning;
- T150: Dynamical planning in case of emergency and weather hazard.



The objective of this WP is to identify innovative technologies in information and control scopes to provide aircraft flight in accordance with planned 4D contracts. To define and develop the necessary tools to be used for the system evaluation.

This WP is divided into 4 tasks:
- Task 210 Procedures for cooperative 4D trajectories development & elaboration including guidance and Control techniques.
- Task 220 Development of advanced ADS-B and ASAS functions
- Task 230 Greening of 4-D contracts: FMS algorithms for emission reduction during the flight at the given trajectory ("greening" fly on given trajectory)
- Task 240 Human aspects: impacts of 4D contracts on flight crew role and situational awareness, identification of required aiding functions



WP300 is dedicated to communication functions to be performed (ground to air, air to air...) to sustain 4D contracting during operation.

This WP is divided into 3 tasks as follows:
- Task 310 Communications Requirements
- Task 320 Preliminary Definition for each Communication subsystem
- Task 330 Communication system simulation



WP400 will be dedicated to the integration of the various simulation modules defined in the previous WP into a distributed simulation and to validate the proposed solutions.

The project simulation facility will be composed of independent tools located in the partners' premises and used to provide results used by the other partners. Traffic simulation nodes will be set up at DLR and ONERA, available for partners to test their simulations.
The distributed simulation will be based on DLR's TRAFSIM/datapool and ONERA's IESTA/HLA and merging the simulation facilities of NLR, DLR, ONERA and TsAGI.
This simulation will make use of a number of simulation modules either already in existence (like traffic simulator, cockpits) or to be developed in WP100 to 300 (like ground trajectory planner, datalink simulation, etc.).
This option will enable proposing a large innovative simulation stand enabling the simulation of some aspects of the 4D contracts implementations, from 4D contract management with the current ATM organization to possible future fully automated ATM options.
Simulations will be carried out in two campaigns (C1 at ONERA/Toulouse and C2 at DLR/Braunschweig), both containing fast-time and real-time-simulations of local and European traffic. Results of the first campaign will be used to refine the criteria and exercises for the second campaign.



The objective of this WP is to disseminate the outputs of the project in the aeronautics and scientific community and to consult with stakeholders to avoid any mismatch with the overall ATS evolution plans. A specific WP has been fully dedicated to this matter as both dissemination and consultation are of high importance for 4DCo-GC.Consultation is made through the analysis of the feedback provided by external people (advisory board, users group) and coordination with related initiatives.

- Task 510 Communication and dissemination (Leader ERDYN): A website will be created in order to provide the public with information regarding the achievements and results obtained by the consortium. Communication also includes paper publication and presentations during conferences or symposia. Most of the partners are likely to make publication of the results of their work in scientific journals.
- Task 520 Consultation through an Advisory board and a users group (Leader ONERA): A nonnegligible part of this WP is dedicated to get feedback from an "advisory board" (included in the Management Structure), composed of people external to the project but involved in the current air transport system (SESAR staff, pilot, controller, ANSP, etc.). These people will have a close look at the project achievements and will provide the consortium with their feedback, based on their knowledge and experience on the current ATS. In addition to this advisory board, a users group will
be invited to the demonstration workshops (including the simulation runs). The differences between the advisory board and the user group are that whereas the advisory board is composed of a few people deeply involved in the project (part of the management structure), the user group is composed of more people, from a "wider spectrum" of activities (industry, academic world, airlines, etc.), but who will only be aware of the project progress through the website information.
- Task 530 Coordination with related projects (leader ONERA): Especially, the alignment with SESAR will be ensured. Coordination with other related projects (NextGen, IFATS, etc.) will also been performed.



To secure the prompt initiation and smooth running of the project activities and the timely production of all deliverables, to the EC as well as to the partners, within the budget, and according to the EC rules. To ensure the proper exploitation of outputs complying with the consortium agreement terms.

-Task 610: Coordination of the consortium. The coordination of the consortium will be performed by the coordinator of the project. This includes the interface with the EC, the administration of the Community financial contribution, the review of deliverables and the monitoring of the compliance of the beneficiaries with their obligations.
-Task 620: General administrative management of the project. This includes the coordination and administration of the partners, through the Core Team, the financial control, consolidation of periodic reports and the provision of communication tools to the consortium and the external parties.
This also includes the organisation of the meetings.
-Task 630: Exploitation. The purpose of this task is to establish and implement the exploitation and to promote the achievements of the projects.
